Dream Appreciation Workshop

A Two-day Workshop

with Graham Saayman & Bill Petrie

(11th – 12th September 2010)

An experience limited to a group of eight participants in which we will explore the meaning of dreams using a step-by-step process, derived from Jungian theory, which offers a safe and effective approach to dream appreciation in a group context. In an open, accepting and respectful atmosphere, we will learn to appreciate how dreams can restore balance and harmony by suggesting creative solutions to problems of everyday life. A major goal is to assist participants to learn a method of dream appreciation that combines both theoretical and experiential approaches to dream work and how to apply such skills in their everyday lives. We will use meditation to stabilise our minds and to assist us in recognising the transitions between wakefulness, sleep and dream.

Graham Saayman, formerly Professor of Psychology at the University of Cape Town, trained initially as a behavioral scientist at McMaster University in Canada and at the University of London. His early work pioneered observational studies of baboon and dolphin social systems in the wild. Graham later trained as a family therapist in Canada and went on to study the relationship between dreams, meditation and imaginal processes in psychotherapy. His book ‘Hunting with the Heart: A Vision Quest to Spiritual Emegence’ highlights the survival value of spiritual generosity. Graham is an Honorary Member of The Southern African Association of Jungian Analysts and of the International Association for Analytical Psychology.

Bill Petrie is a psychotherapist with a fascination with the interface between different healing systems. He trained initially as
a microbiologist but went on, in his late twenties, to train as a clinical psychologist at UCT. His Master’s thesis was on a Jungian understanding of wilderness experience. Bill later trained as a Cognitive Therapist at Oxford University, as a Transpersonal
Psychotherapist at CCPE (London), as a Vision Quest Guide at the School of Lost Borders (USA) and as a Traditional Healer in Botswana. He has a long-standing interest in Buddhist psychology and has been meditating for over twenty years. All of these threads enrich his work.
